Natural Skincare During Cancer Treatment: A Gentle Guide

Cancer treatment can take a significant toll on your skin. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy can all cause dryness, sensitivity, rashes and general discomfort that make your usual skincare routine feel completely wrong for your body.

I know this firsthand. My name is Ifeoma, and I'm the founder of MaOma. After battling and overcoming cancer, I experienced the struggles of extremely dry, sensitive skin during treatment. It was this experience that led me to create MaOma — gentle, effective and affordable natural skincare that's kind to skin when it needs it most.

This guide shares what I've learned about caring for your skin during and after cancer treatment, both from personal experience and from over 20 years of formulating natural products.

How Cancer Treatment Affects Your Skin

Cancer treatments work by targeting fast-growing cells — and because skin cells are among the fastest-growing cells in your body, they're often affected too. Common skin changes during treatment include:

  • Extreme dryness and flaking

  • Increased sensitivity to products you previously tolerated

  • Rashes, redness and irritation

  • Darkening or discolouration of the skin

  • Thin, fragile skin that bruises or tears easily

  • Itching, particularly after radiotherapy

These changes can feel distressing on top of everything else you're going through. The right skincare routine won't fix everything, but it can provide comfort, relief and a small moment of self-care in a difficult time.

Why Natural Products Matter During Treatment

During cancer treatment, your skin's protective barrier is compromised. This means it's more vulnerable to irritation from synthetic ingredients, artificial fragrances, parabens and harsh chemicals found in many mainstream skincare products.

Natural, gentle products are important because they work with your skin rather than against it. Ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil and vitamin E provide moisture and nourishment without the risk of chemical irritation.

That said, "natural" doesn't automatically mean "safe for treatment skin." Some natural ingredients like strong essential oils or exfoliating acids can still be too harsh. The key is choosing products that are specifically formulated to be gentle.

A Simple, Gentle Skincare Routine

During treatment, simplicity is your best friend. Strip your routine back to the essentials:

Step 1: Gentle Cleansing

Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser that won't strip your skin's natural oils. Avoid hot water — lukewarm is best. Pat your skin dry gently rather than rubbing. Our Hydrating Face Wash is designed to cleanse without stripping moisture, making it a good option for sensitive skin.

Step 2: Hydrating Toner

A gentle, alcohol-free toner helps restore your skin's pH after cleansing and adds an extra layer of hydration. Look for ingredients like rose water and aloe vera, which soothe and calm irritated skin. Our Rose Toner uses both of these ingredients.

Step 3: Deep Moisture

This is the most important step. Apply a rich, natural moisturiser while your skin is still slightly damp to lock in hydration. Shea butter and body butters are excellent choices because they create a protective barrier over the skin without clogging pores.

Our Body Butter contains shea butter, mango butter and argan oil — all deeply moisturising, naturally soothing and free from synthetic additives.

Step 4: Targeted Care

For particularly dry areas like hands, elbows and feet, apply a dedicated balm. Lips can also become extremely dry during treatment — keep a natural lip balm handy at all times.

Ingredients to Look For

  • Shea butter — deeply moisturising and anti-inflammatory

  • Coconut oil — gentle, natural moisture that helps strengthen the skin barrier

  • Vitamin E — supports skin healing and reduces inflammation

  • Aloe vera — soothes irritation and redness

  • Jojoba oil — closely mimics your skin's natural oils, so it's easily absorbed

  • Rosehip oil — supports skin regeneration and can help with scarring

Ingredients to Avoid

  • Alcohol-based products — extremely drying on compromised skin

  • Artificial fragrances — common irritants, especially during treatment

  • Retinoids and AHAs/BHAs — too aggressive for treatment-sensitive skin

  • Parabens and sulphates — potential irritants with no benefit for recovery

  • Strong essential oils — some can cause photosensitivity or reactions

Hair Care During Treatment

Hair loss or thinning is one of the most emotionally challenging aspects of cancer treatment. If your hair is thinning but not fully lost, gentle natural oils can help nourish what remains and support regrowth once treatment ends.

Our Moisturising Hair Growth Butter and Batana & Baobab Hair Regrowth Oil are both formulated with gentle, natural ingredients that nourish without irritating a sensitive scalp. Many of our customers have used them during their recovery journey.

If you've experienced complete hair loss, these products can help support healthy regrowth when your hair starts to return.

Self-Care Is Not Selfish

When you're going through cancer treatment, taking a few minutes to care for your skin can feel like a small act of kindness to yourself. It's not about vanity — it's about comfort, dignity and doing something gentle for your body during a difficult time.

At MaOma, we believe everyone deserves access to safe, effective and affordable skincare, especially those whose skin needs the most care. That's why every product we make is 100% natural, handmade with care, and created by someone who truly understands what you're going through.

Important note: Always consult your medical team before introducing new skincare products during treatment. While natural products are generally gentler, your oncologist or dermatologist can advise on what's safe for your specific treatment plan.
